What is the Ten Series?

The Ten Session Series is the original Rolf recipe as designed by Ida P. Rolf. It is a holistic, safe, and effective way to open and balance the body from superficial to deep. As no part of the body exists in isolation, the purpose of the ten series is to de-strain, align, and balance the entire body from superficial to deep, creating a much more balanced and dynamic structure as a whole.

As the practitioner is working through the entire body, layer by layer, each session of Structural Integration is different from that which preceded it. The area of the body, goals of each session, and even techniques vary from session to session. This sequence of opening up the body allows for appropriate fascial and neurological adjustment between sessions and each session builds and complements the one before it, simultaneously preparing the body for the session to come.

Not every client will want or need a ten series. It is essentially an "overhaul" for the body. Specific issues may require very specific asymmetrical work, rather than the broader and more symmetrical work found in the ten series.

In summary the ten series consists of sessions with the following goals:

Session One:  External fascia reflects the body lying under it.  De-strain and organize this fascia and in doing so:

1.  “Horizontalize” the pelvis.  A horizontal pelvis is the point of reference for a body.

2.  Improve breathing pattern and increase vital capacity.  Allow the freedom of movement of the ribs.

Session Two:  The most basic foundation; the feet and ankles.  Promotes grounding.  Relates the feet and lower legs to the earth.

1.  Remove restrictions at the ankle in foot to allow freedom of movement and proper gait.  Balance and free the musculature of the lower leg.

2.  Lengthen the back.

Session Three:  The sides.  Opens up the sides, allowing for full breath, freedom of the shoulder girdle, space between the pelvis and the rib cage.

Session Four:  Initiates the feeling of centering.  Connects the vector of gravity through the core structures of the body. Opens the fascial plane into the pelvic floor, giving support from below.

Open the deep spinal musculature.

Session Five:  Lengthens the frontal structures from the knees to pelvis to ribs to the neck.  Psoas, Rectus Abdominis, Transversus Abdominis.

Session Six:  Lengthens the back of the legs and spine.  Freedom of the sacrum.  Balances the body from front to back.

Session Seven:  Organizes the head and neck, balancing the upper pole.

Session Eight, Nine:  Integrative and balancing sessions based on the individual’s criteria.

Session Ten:  Integrative session aimed toward retraining the nervous system to work more efficiently, allowing the body to function more intrinsically, initiating movement from the core.
